Die Schule akkzeptiert keine Studenten, die sich von Beginn an als 'Filmregisseur' spezialisieren wollen. Es wird vom Studenten der Abt. Film erwartet, daß er in 8 Semestern ein allumfassendes Verständnis für den technischen und künstlerischen Produktionsablauf entwickelt.
Die Aufnahme in die FSW erfolgt mittels mehrtägiger Aufnahmeprüfung. Maturabschluß ist nicht erforderlich.

Die Filmakademie befindet sich zur Zeit im Umbau. Aus einer Abteilung einer Kunsthochschule wird ein Institut an einer Kunstuniversität, aus fünf selbständigen Studienrichtungen (Drehbuch, Kamera, Produktion, Regie und Schnitt) wird eine einzige Studienrichtung mit fünf Studienzweigen. Das bedingt gravierende Veränderungen auch in den Studienplänen, an denen gearbeitet wird. Im Studienbereich Video findet das Grundstudium mit obligatorischen Workshops und Wahlpflicht-Blöcken statt, die fächerübergreifend sind. Nach dem Grundstudium folgt eine Reihe von Projektarbeiten, die Schritt für Schritt zur Fähigkeit führen, eine komplexe Video-Arbeit zu realisieren. Während des Studiums besteht die Möglichkeit sich auf bestimmte Teilbereiche (z.B: Montage, Kamera, Ton) zu konzentrieren und diese vertieft zu erforschen. Ein wichtiger Schwerpunkt des Studienbereichs liegt im Editing. Es umfasst Montage im klassischen Sinn, aber auch kombinierte Verarbeitungsverfahren, z.B. mit Bildbearbeitungen, speziellen Typographien, Multimedia-Kombinationen. Erzählformen, Dramaturgie, Geschichte der Film- und Video-Montage. Vertiefung der technischen und gestalterischen Fertigkeiten auf dem Final-Cut-Programm, dem Avid und dem Pro Tools.

One of the best known American Film Schools is the USC School of Cinema and Television in California. The School was established in 1929 as a collaboration between the University and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. With the School’s launch, USC became the first university in the country to offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in film.
The school is looking for well-rounded, creative students. A strong academic background is essential. However, the selection committee places great consideration on the requested supplemental materials. These materials give the applicant an opportunity to detail their interests, talents and goals. The committee is looking for clarity, continuity and creativity in the writing samples.

The Bachelor of Arts in Film and Television is a two-year, upper division program for students who have completed two years of general college studies. The program provides an education in the history and theory of these art forms and basic learning experiences in production within the context of a liberal arts education.
The Department of Film, Television and Digital Media offers four specializations that lead to the Master of Fine Arts degree. The MFA degree in Animation and degree in Production/Directing are three-year programs. The MFA degree in Screenwriting and the Producers Program MFA are two-year programs. These highly ranked programs train students as scholars and professionals while simultaneously guiding the student toward developing a personal artistic point of view -- and, in the case of the Producers Program an education in the business of producing film and television.

The Department of Design for Stage and Film seeks to install in each student designer an acute awareness of scenery, lighting, and costume for stage and screen. The school offers a three-year course of study leading to a Master of Fine Arts degree. A student may specialize in one or more of these areas, but will gain a strong sense of the totality of the discipline. The Department of Film and Television at the Maurice Canbar Institute of Film & TV offers 2 film related programs: The B.F.A. Program that provides undergraduates with a variety of creative experiences in the conceptual and production phases, and intensive course work is offered in directing, producing, writing and acting, as well as in the craft and technical skills of film editing, video post-production and sound mixing. The M.F.A. Program allows graduate students to develop their creative talent through actual production experience and learn about business procedures used in the profession. The Cinema Studies Program at the Jack H. Skirball Center For New Media and Film focuses on the processes of understanding film and the moving image in its multiple cultural and interdisciplinary contexts. Courses are offered in the history, theory, aesthetics and criticism of film as well as in film genres and techniques.
An interview and portfolio review are required for admission into the Department of Design for Stage and Film. Prior experience in theater or film production is preferred but not required. International applicants must have a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (paper-based test) or 250 (computer-based test) in order to interview for the program.

The NYFA offers a one-year-program and many workshops around the year. In the one-year-program, students may elect to take just semester one (16 weeks) without committing to the 2nd semester. They take can semester one and semester two in different locations (New York, Los Angeles, London). All one-year students write, shoot, direct and edit seven of their own short films.
